Mae

When we arrived back at the mirror the guys had pulled me through, it was nothing more than a broken outline of a mirror. I’d only seen an empty frame twice before in this world, so the sight of it intrigued me more than I wanted to admit.

“I guess we won’t be seeing them from here again,” I said, touching the basic, modern-looking frame.

Hunter stood behind me like a giant, his presence crawling along my spine in the strangest way. It was like this world was cold, but he could never be. And I knew it wasn’t just the warm cloak that I was snuggled deeply into. It was something about the man himself.

He moved closer to me, so close we were almost touching, and ran a finger on the edge of the frame. There were no shards of glass on this side of the mirror, but still, he seemed to be trying to learn something, as he slid that finger of his softly around the surface.

A shiver moved through my body, and I turned to look back at him before I could stop myself.

His narrowed gaze moved from the mirror to me, and his eyes widened ever-so-slightly when they connected with mine.

For some reason, it was hard to breathe.

“You said I was a pleasure to look at.” Hunter’s voice came out low. “Why?”

I stiffened, fighting the wave of embarrassment that made me want to sink into a hole. “What do you mean why?”

He drew himself up taller but continued to hold my gaze. “I know what I look like, Mae. And I know that, despite your words, me being a fae does matter. So why tell me things like that? To hurt me?”

I ignored his accusation. It didn’t take an empath to know that it was a seed born from his own insecurities. Instead, I focused on what mattered.

“What ‘you look like’?” My gaze roamed over him.

Hunter was one of the hottest men I’d ever seen in my life. He was big, in all ways, tall and muscular, with an edge to him that I found far too appealing. His black hair and grey eyes were such a unique combination that he almost looked inhumanely beautiful. And his scars… they were like tattoos. A part of what made him unique.

The only other men who had awakened these kinds of feelings inside of me were the three others that had tried to rescue me. But that just confused me to think about, so I pushed the thought aside. One sexy man after years alone was more than enough. I couldn’t get too greedy.

Hunter scoffed and looked away.

I acted without thinking, grasping his chin and drawing him back to look at me. His expression was so confused that I couldn’t help it when I pulled him closer and kissed those perfect lips of his. He held himself stiffly for the briefest of moments before groaning and tugging me closer. His hand dug into the back of my hair, and he held me tightly against him.
